2008 Summer e-Newsletter
President's Brief
Happy Spring/Almost Summer Everyone:
Even though we’re nearing the end of our Chapter’s fiscal year (June 30), we’re not slowing down on behalf of our members. Our board of directors this year has been tireless in looking strategically at so many aspects of our Chapter.
I’d like to share just some of our new or reinstated directives from this year as they fall into our three areas of operation – Programming, Membership and Communications. Our ultimate goal is to always ensure that we are adding value to your AMA membership.
Programming
- We are moving to year-round programming, beginning this summer. We believe it’s important to continue the networking and marketing education that our membership wants. Business doesn’t close for the summer. So, AMA Iowa has decided to stay open as well. See below for some exciting programming just around the corner.
- In addition to our traditional monthly meetings, we brought back our monthly Special Interest Group sessions to rave reviews. We covered a broad range of topics from leading-edge technology to market research to direct marketing. And next year, you can expect the same kind of programming, with speakers from in-state and out-of-state.
- And, our 3rd annual NOVA Awards program – recognizing “Freakishly Good Marketing” – had three new categories. See the 2008 nova award winners page for the complete list of winners.
Membership
- We started morning “Coffee Chats” for new member orientation this year. We’ve held three so far with very positive feedback. We will continue to hold these chats on a regular basis.
- We developed our “Little @ Book,” a tool for new and existing members on the benefits of AMA membership, but also to keep track of the contacts you make through AMA.
- And, we reinstated our Student Scholarship for an AMA collegiate member, which was awarded at the NOVAs.
Communications
- We reinstated our quarterly e-newsletter last fall, thus keeping our members apprised of the Chapter’s activities and benefits.
- We are revamping our AMA Web site which should be complete late June. And, look soon for a revamped national AMA Web site, too.
- We are in exploratory stages looking at some of the “community-based” technology tools and how we can add an additional layer of interactivity for networking and communications.
THANK YOU for your membership in AMA. We hope you like what we’ve added and continue to offer. If you have thoughts or ideas regarding your membership, please let me know.
As we transition to a new chapter year on July 1, it has been my privilege to serve as your Chapter’s President for 2007-08. A BIG Thank You to our board of directors this year. It took an entire team effort to make the year’s activities happen. This has been a terrific board of directors to work with.

Drake University Student is Recipient of AMA Iowa Scholarship
Lindsay Eickstaedt, a Drake University student from Long Grove, Iowa, is the recipient of the AMA Iowa 2008 Student Scholarship. The $500 scholarship is awarded to a student member of the American Marketing Association who demonstrates leadership and excels in their academic program.
Lindsay is a double-major in Marketing and Management with a concentration in Insurance. She has led several leadership positions at the university and participated in both marketing and sales internships in the Des Moines area. The selection committee was impressed with Lindsay’s initiative, enthusiasm, and obvious passion for the marketing profession. Lindsay’s goal upon graduation from Drake University (May of 2009) is to remain in the Des Moines area and work toward completion of an M.B.A. Congratulations, Lindsay!
AMA Iowa Membership Approves Local Dues Increase
The AMA Iowa Board of Directors wants to thank the AMA Iowa membership for approving a $15 increase in local dues, effective July 1, 2008. Local dues hadn’t been increased for 18 years, and the Board determined that it was necessary to raise dues to keep up with rising costs for existing programs and services, and as we continue to add value for our members.
In order to be a member of our local chapter, you must also be a member of the national organization.
Effective July 1, annual dues will be:
- Professional and academic members: $225 ($185/national and $40/local)
- Bridge members - this increase does not apply
- Collegiate members - this increase does not apply
To help you understand how we came to this decision, some of the key activities and services that we offer to our members that impact our budget are:
- Fees for higher-level speakers at monthly luncheons
- Beginning year-round programming with monthly programs, summer 2008
- Increased monthly luncheon food costs
- Monthly luncheon room rental fees downtown (for 1-2 special meetings each year)
- Annual NOVA marketing awards program
- Enhanced membership relations program, including new member orientations and incentives
- Increased communications with Web site, e-newsletter and monthly program announcements
- Collegiate member scholarship fund
Again, Thank You!
IH Spring Acquisition Campaign
International headquarters for the American Marketing Association is launching its 2008 Spring Acquisition Campaign that runs April 1 through May 31. Any new members that sign up during those dates will get their $30 application fee waived (member and chapter fees still apply) and $20 prepaid MasterCard will be offered as a special incentive. Or rather than the $20 prepaid MasterCard, the member can receive a $200 conference discount coupon. We encourage you to share this information with your marketing colleagues that are not currently members of the Iowa Chapter.
Member Coffee Chats
We had our second “Coffee Chat” as a way to welcome our new members. We had six new members join us in April and another five in May. It’s a great way for new members to meet other members and an open forum for asking questions about AMA. We are planning on continuing this effort throughout the summer months as well. If you would like to join us to tell your story of why you enjoy being a member of AMA, contact Georgann Smith at georganns@TheMembersGroup.com. This is just another way of getting people excited about being part of the chapter and provides another opportunity for creating relationships with other members.
Calendar of Events - Mark Your Calendars Now!
Please join us for our new summer sessions beginning July 9th. This session will be a roundtable discussion and networking opportunity for our members. In August, Mark Jennings, Associate Athletics Director, University of Iowa, will be our keynote speaker. Mark was responsible for "selling the sizzle" with the reseating of 70,000 Kinnick Stadium seats and has a great story to tell.
Please watch the AMA Iowa Web site, your e-mail, and mailboxes for more information about our summer sessions. We look forward to providing you with added value to your membership through these sizzlin' summer sessions!
