2007 Winter e-Newsletter

President's Brief

Happy New Year, Everyone!

As we e-mail out our second e-newsletter of the year, we hope that you all had a great holiday season! We have a lot planned for the second half of the AMA year. Great monthly programs, networking activities and our third annual NOVA Awards program on May 1. Dates are below, so be sure to mark your calendars.

Plus, our Membership Committee has been working on an action plan to increase communications with new members and existing members. With each issue I want to highlight a couple key benefits of membership. This issue I want to focus on a few things that we will be launching in January as part of this effort.

  • New member orientations. We want to hold these either over breakfast or lunch to acquaint new members with AMA, its benefits, and to begin the personal networking process with fellow marketers.
  • Lunch ‘n Learns. We would like to visit over lunch with different organizations in the metro area to promote AMA with the goal of increasing activity from that organization. And AMA will provide the lunch. If your company is interested in learning more about AMA or getting more involved, please contact Georgann Smith, VP/Membership, georganns@themembersgroup.com.
  • AMA Iowa membership booklet. We are producing a unique, Iowa-specific membership booklet to be launched at the February monthly meeting. Information will include membership benefits, AMA history, schedule of events and other important information about AMA Iowa.

In our annual surveys, networking with fellow marketers is always mentioned as one of the key things members like about AMA. We hope through these grassroots efforts, by making personal connections between members and the board, that you will see added value from your membership.

Lastly, we will soon be working on nominating members to join our board for the term to begin July, 2008. If you’re interested, please contact me.

Again, thank you for your membership in AMA Iowa. See you at the next meeting!

AMA Student Job Shadow Program Returns in 2008

The AMA college student Job Shadow program will be returning in 2008. This is an excellent opportunity for the students to learn more about the marketing profession, and for you to learn what’s being taught about marketing at the collegiate level. (It’s also a great way to subtly scout new talent for your organization.)

The shadow sessions can be as short as an hour or two, or they can last a whole day or more. They’re scheduled at your convenience (just sometime during the spring semester); the students can shadow one-on-one with you or a colleague, or rotate around and shadow with several people in your organization.

We’ve done this in the past, and received rave reviews from both the college students and from the AMA members who participated. If you are interested, please contact Scott Fiene at scott@magnastarmarketing.com. Your name will then be included on a list; the students will use that list to contact you to set up a date and time for the shadow. You are under no obligation – if circumstances change when a student calls to schedule, you can simply decline.

There will also be opportunities to sign up for the job shadow program at upcoming AMA chapter meetings.

This is a great, no-hassle way to get more involved with AMA Iowa, and to meet some of the most talented marketing students in Central Iowa.
