Emotion by Design | Creative Leadership Lessons from a Life at Nike

Drake University’s Fall Bucksbaum Lectureship in Business to feature former Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of Nike and global marketing and design leader, Greg Hoffman.

About the Speaker

Greg Hoffman, former Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of Nike and author of "Emotion by Design: Creative Leadership Lessons from a Life at Nike," will be the second speaker of the Bucksbaum Lectureship in Business series. The lecture will take place on November 14 at the Knapp Center at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public with no registration required. A clear bag policy will be enforced at the venue. The lecture will also be livestreamed at live.drake.edu.

In addition to serving as Nike’s CMO for more than 27 years, Hoffman is also the founder and principal of the brand leadership platform, Modern Arena. In 2023 he shared his brand expertise with the world through his best-selling book "Emotion by Design: Creative Leadership Lessons from a Life at Nike," which has been published in 13 languages. Hoffman’s lecture will explore topics discussed in his book including how to build strong emotional connections between brands and consumers, emphasizing the importance of creativity, authenticity, and social impact in marketing and brand building. His book will be available for sale, and a book signing will take place immediately following the lecture.

Hoffman, a global leader in the field of marketing and design, brings a wealth of experience to the lecture series. His nearly 28-year tenure at Nike solidified his reputation as a visionary leader, driving innovation and shaping the brand's global success. During his time at Nike, Hoffman directed ongoing dialogues for racial equality, environmental sustainability, and empowerment in professional sports. His work demonstrates how businesses can use their influence to address pressing social issues. Recognized by Fast Company as one of the Most Creative People in Business, Hoffman's insights will offer invaluable perspectives to students, faculty, staff, and the broader business community.
