Organizations have worked for years to help their employees understand the value of a diverse workforce. One of the primary obstacles we face in leveraging workplace diversity is our own unconscious bias. Research suggests that we instinctively place people into categories based on their appearance, educational level, social status, job title, and so on. Right or wrong, this helps us order our world and saves us time and effort as we process information about people.

However, these stereotypes—or unconscious biases—lead us to make assumptions about others. These unconscious biases can affect who is hired, promoted, and developed in the workplace, which can ultimately derail your organization’s workplace culture and brand value.

Speaker Biography:  

Claudia Schabel, President of Schabel Solutions, combines over a decade of experience as a Diversity and Inclusion practitioner with Fortune 100 (Principal Financial Group) and Fortune 500 (DuPont) companies with a multicultural background to offer consulting, training and coaching services in the areas of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to businesses, educational, governmental and not-for-profit organizations. 

Schabel Solutions is Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI®) certified, a woman/minority-owned business and Iowa-certified as a Targeted Small Business (TSB) and Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) certified.

Schabel is a commissioner on the City of Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission and serves on the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) State Council as the Director of Diversity.

Schabel is a native of Brazil and speaks Portuguese, Spanish, English and some Japanese. She earned a BA degree in International Relations from Drake University and lives in Des Moines, Iowa.
