Introducing the 2017-2018 AMA Iowa President: Christy Gooding
Christy is the Senior Manager Corporate Communications at GuideOne Insurance. She started as an AMA Iowa communications committee volunteer before joining the board in 2011. During her tenure on the board, she’s served on the communications and membership committees before moving into the leadership track. Christy can often be found enjoying her kids’ activities, at the gym working on her fitness or at a local brewery or restaurant enjoying a few glasses of wine with family and friends. Read on to learn more about Christy.
What is special about AMA Iowa? The people. In my seven years on the board, I have made some wonderful, life-long friendships throughout the entire AMA network, not just in Iowa. I know I can reach out to any one of them for guidance – whether for AMA Iowa or in my personal career. It’s an incredibly supportive network.
What is your leadership philosophy? Lead by example. I will never ask anyone to do anything that I, myself, am not willing to do. Well, except math. You don’t want me to do math.
What does true leadership mean to you? Understanding that leadership is a privilege. As a leader, I have the opportunity to change someone’s life every single day. My goal is to develop and maximize the potential of the AMA Iowa team and my team at GuideOne.
What advice would you give someone going into a leadership position for the first time? Learn to give up trying to control everything. I’m a Type A personality, so this is something I am continually working on. BUT, I have amazing team members both on the AMA Iowa board AND at work. I’m learning to get out of their way, let them do their jobs, and always available when needed.
What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as a leader? I read a lot. Whether it’s blog posts, magazine articles or books, I make it a point to read what I can on leadership and marketing. Right now, I’m reading The Power of Positive Leadership by Jon Gordon. I also, recently, started participating in Iowa Women Lead Change (IWLC). I find their content to be relevant, educational and inspiring.
What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had? I worked at the Theatrical Shop in Valley Junction during the Halloween season in high school. What I didn’t realize was that I had to dress up in costume while working. I also worked behind the wig counter – which meant every single costume had to include a wig. My family and friends were not allowed to visit me at work!
What is the best business or leadership book you have ever read? The Five Dysfunctions of A Team: A Leadership Fable by Patrick Lencioni. It’s an instructive leadership fable that highlights why teams struggle. I liked the style in which it was written, but I really liked the actionable steps provided to build an effective team.
What is your favorite thing to do?I really enjoy spending time with family and friends. I am lucky to have family in the Des Moines-area and a great network of friends.
